First, consider the number of teeth when choosing a milling insert. For example, coarse-tooth milling inserts with a diameter of 100mm have only 6 teeth, while fine-tooth milling inserts with a diameter of 100mm can have 8 teeth. The size of the tooth pitch will determine the number of teeth that participate in cutting at the same time during milling, which affects the smoothness of cutting and the requirements for the cutting rate of the machine tool. Each manufacturer of milling inserts has its own line of coarse-toothed and fine-toothed milling inserts.
During heavy roughing, excessive cutting forces can cause chatter in a less rigid machine. This chatter can lead to chipping of carbide inserts, reducing tool life. The choice of coarse-toothed milling inserts can reduce the power requirements of the machine tool. Therefore, when the size of the spindle hole is small (such as R-8, 30#, 40# taper holes), milling can be effectively performed with coarse-toothed milling inserts.
Coarse-toothed milling inserts are mostly used for roughing because they have larger chip flutes. If the chip flute is not large enough, it will cause difficulty in chip rolling or increase the friction between the chip and the cutter body and the workpiece. At the same feed speed, the cutting load per tooth of coarse-tooth milling inserts is larger than that of dense-tooth milling inserts.
When finishing milling, the cutting depth is shallow, generally 0.25~0.64mm, the cutting load of each tooth is small (about 0.05~0.15mm), and the required power is not large. You can choose dense tooth milling inserts, and you can choose a larger feed quantity. Since the metal removal rate is always limited in fine milling, it does not matter if the chip flutes are smaller for dense milling inserts.
For spindles with larger taper holes and better rigidity, rough milling can also be performed with dense-tooth milling inserts. Since dense-tooth milling inserts have more teeth involved in cutting at the same time, when using a larger depth of cut (1.27 ~ 5mm), pay attention to whether the power and rigidity of the machine tool are sufficient, and whether the chip flute of the milling inserts is large enough. The chip removal needs to be verified by tests. If there is a problem with the chip removal, the cutting amount should be adjusted in time.
